As many of you are well aware by now, Friday was the big launch of WMBF News. We were all very excited, and apparently we weren't the only ones. I’ve never seen so many gifts of food in the WMBF studios. We were swimming in cake and cookies and pizza and just about anything edible that you can imagine. So, of course, there were leftovers at the end of the day for all of us to split up and take home to enjoy.
My roommates (Rebecca Ryan and Meredith Harvie) and I were all sitting in the break room enjoying some of the treats when News Director Matt Miller strolled by lugging a huge fruit basket. Seeing us, he of course gave up the heavy load and we all like fruit (especially free fruit) so we were grateful for the gift.
Fast forward a day to Saturday night…We finally got around to digging into the huge basket of goodies. Becky was the first to discover a coconut among the pile, and that’s when the adventure started. We all decided it would be really nice to have some coconut juice, and seeing as none of us had ever actually had a real coconut before us, it seemed like something fun to try.

The question then became how does one open a coconut. Well, first we tried a knife, which quickly got ruled out. Next, we decided a hammer might help. We tried hammering the knife into the coconut, but it didn’t work very well either. Next, the hammer inspired the idea of nails and so we decided to try and nail holes into the coconut, hoping juice would drain from there.
We had been trying to crack this nut for over half an hour, and while most of you are thinking we should have given up, we just couldn’t give up the chance at some coconut juice and of course the pride that
would come with finally getting that coconut open. We went back to the hammer and butcher knife, which resulted in coconut on a stick. Too bad you can’t eat it that way (although Rebecca was ready to try). Once we managed to remove the knife (a task in itself) we put the coconut over a glass, looking forward to the juice we were sure would drain from the stubborn fruit.
As half baked as this story sounds, we did check it out on the internet. I’ll have you know, the experts on the world wide web also thought the hammer and nails were the best way to go (albeit they probably would’ve suggested longer nails). Alas, we still have no juice to show for our efforts. I’m not sure how we didn’t manage at least a drop of something. So, if any of you have suggestions for how to get the juice out of a coconut, please feel free to let us know. Until then, that coconut will probably join our pinecone home décor above the front door (that is, if Greg is willing to crawl back up on that ledge again).
So why the title, you wonder. Well, Meredith, Rebecca, and I are living life without the 3 M’s which is how we get ourselves into these messes. We have no Money to just go buy coconut juice, no Man to crack that thing open for us, and no Mom to talk us out of our crazy antics. However, we had fun and made some good memories, which at the end of the day, is really what it’s all about.

Just thought I'd help you guys out. The key to getting the juice out is puncturing two of the eyes. There's three "eyes" in the coconut - looks like a bowling ball. You were on track with the nails, you just have to use two holes. Good luck with the next one! :D
