We’ve gotten a lot of calls and comments into WMBF News asking why we chose to run the story about the man who is charged with having inappropriate relations with a horse. I want to thank everyone who took the time to call, email, leave comments on facebook or send a tweet. We want to encourage all of our viewers to let us know what is important to them. I also want to take the opportunity tell you why I thought it was a story that needed to be covered.
First and foremost, it was our responsibility. A horrible crime was committed in our viewing area and we have responsibility to report it. Too often, the stories we report aren’t good news. The story that immediately followed the horse story at 5:30 was about a man on trial accused of trying to kill his wife in front of their kids. We didn’t get a single complaint about that story.
As a news organization, we also have a responsibility to shine light on problems that need to be resolved. This crime was committed by a person who needs professional help. With the attention devoted to this by the media, I think there is a stronger chance of this man getting the help he needs. Often people who need mental help are pushed aside. With the amount of public attention on this case, I feel this is less likely to happen.
The story of the horse’s owner also needs to be told. She is a woman who cares very deeply about her horse. She was obviously dedicated to keeping her animals safe. Too often, we report on people who do horrible things to animals. This was a woman who cared enough to put herself at risk to keep them safe.

The Kindness of Our Viewers
Sharing the news of my pregnancy with you all back in May has been pretty exciting. It's fun to tell people you are pregnant -- let alone have the chance to announce to a whole audience your big news.
Then I got to let you all know in on the news that we are having a boy! I've had lots of advice, well wishes and emails in the last few months. Today, I got my first gift from a viewer.
Debbie Moss from Little River emailed me a couple weeks ago, excited to watch the progress of my belly. She is the proud grandma to a little boy -- so she felt a kinship. Today, I walked into work and found she had left me a diaper cake! It's decorated with all sorts of baby essentials -- wash clothes, pacifiers, spoons, socks, rattles. It's just darling.
I wanted to take a second and thank Debbie for her gift and show it off to you all too. Debbie is in the diaper cake business ... so if you need one for a friend or party she allowed me to post her number 843-399-5585.
I'm now 27 weeks -- looking forward to October and busy decorating a nursery now. I'll take some photos when we get some of that work done.

Thoughts for the week
I thought I'd just take a moment to reflect back on this past week's events here in South Carolina. As many of you know Gov. Mark Sanford admitted that he'd been unfaithful to his wife. I'm just taken back for a moment about this always wonder why? maybe he asks himself the same question? For years all we've heard from him is, Jenny and the 4 boys, political campaigns that portray the perfect American family and deep down for so long was the deep dark secret. Yes, I'd heard months ago there was trouble in the gov's mansion, but after months of nothing coming out I assumed it was just a rumor. I guess there's always truth to be found in time. And no I am not one to judge, not my place to do that.
But as I was at the news conference on Wednesday, as usual it took him a while to get to his main point, I did have to stop and think for a moment. Did he say what I thought he said? He did and that makes me wonder how many more folks have cheated on their significant other? When's the time you find out? Why would you do that? Yes I know things can happen and temptation is hard to fight. But deep down I can't imagine that I'd ever actually do it. Seems like you'd have to be stronger than that, if you truely love someone. Even if times are hard, is the love not strong enough to fight your way out of it? Relationships are not easy, I know, but if the connection is strong between two people then things will work out. How many times have you been upset with someone and realize, it's just a misunderstanding? But I think the real the question becomes, how do you allow yourself to fall in love with someone else when you were already in love?
And this did weight on my mind for my own life and situations I've been in. Compare and contrast and what mistakes I've made and how to not make them again.
So for each of us I think we should evaluate our own lives and figure out where our hearts are. Would I cheat? Why would I cheat? and how do I keep myself from cheating? Truth, Honesty and Love are three qualities of life I think we all need to evaluate and see where our heart, mind and soul meet at to always stay true to yourself and the people we love. Have I failed? yes but it's what we do with failure that makes us a better person in the end.

Adventures at the Flintlake…I’m on FIRE!
Living on my own (or at least away from my boyfriend and father) there are a few things I’ve had to learn. A few weeks ago I learned what a trap pipe is and how terrible it smells when it gets clogged. But the feeling of accomplishment of unclogging hair- and the Lord only knows what else- makes my adventures in plumbing worth the dry heaves from the smell.
Now, tonight was a different story. Silly me, I ordered checks with the wrong account number on them. My brilliant, simple fix? Burn the darn things.
I certainly was proud to have matches tucked away in my jewelry box. And to be safe, I decided to do my controlled burn in the bathroom sink. Everything was going fine. It took a few matches to get the blaze going and them…ahhhhhhhh. Surely no one would be able to steal my identity now.
Little did I know, my smoke detectors work. Imagine that. Within a few seconds of my project the three-count them three- smoke detectors in my room and bathroom were blaring in my ears. They must be connected to the ones down stairs too! Before I knew what was happening, my apartment turned into a bleeping, beeping mess of smoke.
Trying to spare myself the embarrassment of the fire department showing up at my house, I quickly took to fanning the beeping devils with my snake-skinned clutch. Running down stairs, I opened the sliding glass door and turned the ceiling fan on full blast.
In the midst of getting the beeping devils to cut off, I forgot about my sink running with 3 books of checks in it. I came up stairs to find the sink overflowing with half cooked checks and black, sooty water.
It looks like my plumbing skills will come in handy again, I guess. Wish me luck cleaning up the mess.

Horry Co. Wildfires
We're completely in the middle of a "news hurricane" over here at the station -- and in all honesty, this is one of the most intense environments I've ever been in. This feeling is what people in the news industry live for.
But among all of the chaos, I wanted to take a quick minute to send my own personal "Thank You" to all of the rescue crews trying their hardest to battle the blaze. We're all rooting for you guys and are hoping for the best.
Please stay safe -- and thanks for risking your lives for the well-being of others.
As for those who have become a victim to the flames -- you're in our thoughts. Stay strong. There's a whole community that will support you.

Walking for a cure!
It's a cause near and dear to my heart -- finding a cure to cancer. My mother is a 10-year survivor of Leukemia and my grandmother is currently losing her battle with the disease after beating it two times in the past.
If you've been watching WMBF News over the past week or two, you've noticed we've been covering the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life events that are sweeping the Grand Strand and Georgetown County. The 12-hour events are held at a local track, field or recreation center, and participants raise money and walk around a track through the night.
Horry and Georgetown Counties have contributed thousands upon thousands of dollars to helping find the cure for cancer -- and we're getting near -- but the fight isn't over yet.
If you're in the mood for a breath of fresh air after work or want to honor someone you know who battled, survived or lost their lives to cancer... here's a list of dates for Relay for Life events around town:
