Higher property taxes or a penny sales tax...that is the question. Or at least that is the question that has been looming above the heads of the Horry County School Board for some time.
Tonight was supposed to be the big night! Finally after months of discussion and meetings the Horry County School Board was scheduled to vote on the one cent sales tax, a proposal that would help fund Horry County Schools, Coastal Carolina University, and Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
But right at the start of tonight's meeting, Chairman Will Garland proposed an amendment to the agenda. He proposed the sales tax proposal not be voted upon until next week's meeting, in consideration of two absent board members. Mr. Garland believed they deserved the right to cast their own vote and speak their piece and the rest of the board agreed. So for now, I guess the suspense must continue until next week's meeting where the fully present board will hopefully make a decision.
