It sure feels like the weekend should already be here, considering we've covered enough news just in the first three days of the week to last us quite a while!
In news, some days we're lucky if we get one big story. But Tuesday, we got two. The Inauguration of our first black president, Barack Obama, and a winter storm in the Carolinas that I'm sure will have people talking for a while. I think the WMBF News Team did a wonderful job covering both events for you, offering every way of delivering the news to you we have available to us... television, our website, alerts on your phone, emails, webcam video... we used every tool in this newsroom.
As I said, some days we're lucky to get one big story. When we do, it's even rarer that the big story is one of a happy nature. I can say I think both of our big stories this week were heartwarming... here's why:
First, the Inauguration. I tuned in to Brian Williams and the NBC News Team's coverage Tuesday morning to see the "official" stuff... basically the Oath of Office. I ended up glued to my TV until NBC's coverage ended at 5pm. I couldn't get enough. And everyone I've talked to felt the same way. It was amazing to see the amount of people who gathered in our Nation's Capitol for the event, amid the freezing temperatures. Through my TV, I felt such a sense of togetherness, like everyone in the country paused for a moment and said "Let's start over." From what the commentators were saying, the energy in the crowds wasn't even being conveyed in the least over the airwaves. To think one man's message made that all possible. No matter which way you voted, you can't deny the positive spirit that soaked Washington, D.C. on Inauguration Day. Let's pray our new President can continue his message of Hope through what could be some of the darker days of his term.
Now, the winter weather. It was the first storm of 2009, and to be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect. I had heard rumors to the tune of "when there's snow flurries... towns shut down, schools close, stores run out of essentials, etc..." I was prepared for the worst. I think we got the best. Towns did go on delays and schools did cancel, but the stores were just fine. And everyone we talked to was excited about the snow. Parents were calling and emailing us pictures. Their children had never seen snow! I can't imagine that, being from Michigan and all. You should see the smiles on these kids faces, laughing, playing out in the snow. Instead of worrying about driving in the conditions and rushing to the store to stock up on water and bread, it seemed families stayed home, together, and enjoyed the winter weather. You can see some of the pictures on the News Nation part of our website.
After all this, doesn't it seem like the weekend should be here already? I agree.
