While many of us live along the ocean and probably spend a great deal of time at the beach if never hurts to be reminded of the dangers the ocean presents. This week is National Riptide Awareness Week so when you're going to the beach take a moment to understand and respect the water. If you ever find yourself in a riptide, don't panic and don't fight the current. Once you're out of the current swim parrallel to shore aware from the current and then swim in.
In addition to summer fun at the beach the warm weather also presents a danger to some. The older and younger population are more suseptable to high temperatures. Year after year the Horry County Council on aging provides fans and window mounted air conditioners for seniors. But this year with large budget cuts affecting their services the agency is unable to provide those machines. Services such as food, health screenings and cleaning services they say take a priority. So if you know a older person in your neighborhood take time to check in with them and say hi. Perhaps bring a cool drink with you.
On to news for the day, a group of people are thanking Mayor Rhodes of Myrtle Beach today for "Taking Back May." The group "Take Back May" say it opposes bike rallies and say they are appreciative of the city's efforts to do away with them. Proponents of bike rallies also showed up to express their opinions.
